It’s been a busy start to a new academic year at Cardiff Global Health Student Network. Our mission is to get as many new people involved in Global health as possible – and not just medics!

The new committee had a lot of fun ‘glittering up for global health’ at both fresher’s fairs before we kicked off the year with a “Give it a Go” session. We introduced our new members to the global network and had an exciting array of foods to try as we explored food sustainability and ethical procurement. It made all of us rethink everything from the kind of food we buy to the shops we purchase our food from…

Our short course has been well attended so far and we’ve had a huge mix of different speakers each week as we explore international and local issues. We’ve had experts in gender based violence in India, a collaborated evening with the surgical society, a campaign for world food day and socials each week too!

We’ve also linked in with two local charities in Cardiff: Huggard who work with the homeless, and The Living Room who support those struggling with addiction. The whole society was humbled to have a talk from a medical student who struggles with an addiction – it really brought the global issue close to home.

Coming up we also have campaigns for International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People (29th November) and World AIDS Day (1st December).

Five of our members attended the London conference and returned bursting with enthusiasm and new ideas on how to make our branch achieve as much as we can this year. This weekend five more are off to Leeds and we’ve already booked flights to Aberdeen too!
