What is the IFMSA?
The International Federation of Medical Students Associations (IFMSA) was founded in 1951 and is the world’s oldest and largest independent organization representing associations of medical, and healthcare students internationally. It currently maintains 132 National Member Organizations from more than 124 countries with over one million students represented worldwide. IFMSA is recognized as a non-governmental organization within the United Nations system and the World Health Organization, and also works with the World Medical Association. As Students for Global Health, we represent the UK within IFMSA. Find out more at ifmsa.org
What is the August Meeting?
The August Meeting is one of two annual general assemblies held by IFMSA. Around 1000 students from across the world attend and there is voting, workshops, talks and training sessions. Students for Global Health attend to represent the views of the UK and have our voice in global health on the international level.

Delegates attend one of the six standing committees, the main areas IFMSA works in:

  • Standing Committee on Sexual and reproductive health including HIV/AIDS (SCORA)
  • Standing Committee on Medical Education (SCOME)
  • Standing Committee on Human Rights and Peace (SCORP)
  • Standing Committee on Public Health (SCOPH)
  • Standing Committee on Professional Exchanges (SCOPE)
  • Standing Committee on Research Exchanges (SCORE)

The theme for this year’s August Meeting is “SOCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY – HEALTH BEYOND THE HOSPITAL”.

Any student can apply – you don’t need to be a medical student, and you don’t need to have any previous experience in Students for Global Health international work! Previous delegates have had success in fundraising to cover the costs of these meetings, so this is definitely something to explore also. To hear about previous students’ experiences, check out the March Meeting 2018 blog series: https://studentsforglobalhealth.org/category/ifmsa/march-meeting-2018/

The meeting will run from 2-8th August and will cost between £450-500 to attend (not including flights). The deadline to apply is the 24/4/18 at 23:59 GMT. Apply here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfcmQ-a33IfdQpx3iWv37NX-Uiq2jDojUsxONCUcR0WRniXRw/viewform
